Opening

During a sudden thaw near Geneva, a waterproof codex is recovered from ice-fed water below a cliffside laboratory ruin. Its pages contain formulas related to galvanic reanimation, but the annotations alternate between Victor’s methodical hand and a second voice arguing back from the margins. The family wants the notebook destroyed, a former tutor wants it hidden, and Victor understands with mounting horror that some of the refinements are not his. Someone studied his work closely enough not to imitate it, but to continue it. If creation now has a reader, the next catastrophe may already be taking notes.
